GIRL POWER

Why Girl?

Around the world, girls continue to face unique barriers that violate their rights and keep them from reaching their full potential. Discrimination leads to injustices like gender-based violence, limited or no educational, child marriage, and early pregnancy. Chance to Play is standing with girls and young women by providing opportunities and support for them to become leaders through soccer programs. Once girls are aware of their rights and have an improved social position, they can advocate for change in their lives, in their community, or around the world. Equality needs to be recognized by the world and communities so it empowers and the potential of youth – especially girls. Our focus on girls includes boys from our work.

NORMAL IS GIRLS DENIED EQUALITY

Every day, millions of girls around the world are denied their basic human rights – simply because they’re girls. Girl Power is Chance to Play’s initiative that supports the youth-led movement for girls’ rights and gender equality.

Every child has the right to an education, an estimated 130 million girls around the world are not in school, and those who are, struggle to remain in the classroom – where they belong. And yet, it’s proven that when girls achieve an education, they have the opportunity to write their own future.

Child marriage, or early marriage, is any marriage where at least one of the parties is under 18 years of age. Forced marriages are marriages in which one and/or both parties have not personally expressed their full and free consent to the union. A child marriage is considered to be a form of forced marriage, given that one and/or both parties have not expressed full, free and informed consent.

Gender Base Violence can be defined as a structural problem that is deeply embedded in unequal power relationships between men and women and disproportionately affects women. Child, early or forced marriage, female genital mutilation, domestic violence, early and forced pregnancy are some examples of types of Gender Base Violence that affect girls and women throughout their lives.
